City demonstrates free, fish-friendly car wash kits at May 3 school fund-raiser
City of Tacoma Environmental Services kicks off spring car wash season with a
demonstration of its free Clean Bay Car Wash Kits—designed to protect the environment
while car washers raise money for their causes. Students from Life Christian Academy
will use one of the car wash kits at their fish-friendly fund-raiser.
The City’s easy-to-use kits contain all the necessary equipment to direct soapy car
wash water to the sewer system instead of to storm drains. Sewer system water, unlike
the water that enters the storm drains, is treated before it is released back into the
environment.
That’s important to marine life, said Paul Tollefson, the City employee who
runs the Clean Bay Car Wash Kit program. Water entering the storm drains dumps
directly into creeks or lakes or into Puget Sound, where the soap can kill fish and other
organisms. See the environmental car wash kits in action on May 3 in the school’s parking lot.
Life Christian Academy students will raise
money to benefit My Sister’s Pantry and other school-supported organizations. Students
also will hold a bake sale at the car wash.
The City’s popular environmental education program, the EnviroChallenger, will
have a presence at the event. An EnviroChallenger Educator will be there teaching kids about surface water pollution and the importance everyday activities play in keeping the
City’s watersheds and water bodies clean and healthy. Look for fun games and
giveaways.
The City lends its Clean Bay Car Wash Kits free of charge to any community
group holding a car wash in Tacoma.
