Mayor Uses New Electric Cars to Improve Neighborhood Service
Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll joined Barry Carr, East Zone Sales Manager for Global Electric Motor Cars, LLC, neighborhood representatives and city representatives to unveil his initiative for use of 25 new electric cars for safety and constituent service. In my continuing effort to enhance quality of life issues, safety issues and constituent service
these vehicles will be used throughout the city to address neighborhood concerns, said Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll.
The 25 cars will be distributed to departments that have daily neighborhood responsibilities. The
Department of Code Enforcement will use the electric cars on a daily basis to address quality of life issues by identifying trash, overgrowth and graffiti issues. The Syracuse Police Department will expand their community policing efforts by placing a car in the four storefronts located in the Eastwood, North Side, Wescott Street and Downtown areas. Fire Inspectors for the Syracuse Fire Department will use the vechicles for gas station inspections and other commercial facilities. The Syracuse Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Programs will address maintenance issues in parks throughout the City of Syracuse. The cars will also allow them to increase patrol and respond to requests for medical assistance. The Airport will use the cars for traffic control in front of the terminal and insure pedestrian safety.
The electric cars meet federal and state safety standards and can be used on private property and
public roads. The five-horsepower vehicles have zero emissions and add increased visibility and presence in all areas of the city.
The electric cars were voluntarily donated as part of a New York Power Authority- DaimlerChrysler Program, which will put electric cars into use around the state, with donations to several cities and villages.
