Car Repair Brochure Available in Spanish
The California Department of Consumer Affairs announced the availability of a free brochure that provides tips on maintaining your car and selecting an auto repair shop, as well as information on consumer rights. The brochure, A Consumer's Guide to Automotive Repair, is available in Spanish, as well as English.
We recommend that all car owners keep a copy of the brochure in their glove compartment, along with registration and insurance paperwork, said Patrick Dorais, acting chief of the department's Bureau of Automotive Repair. Be sure to refer to this handy guide before taking your car to a repair shop.
Here are some of the tips:
Put Yourself In The Driver's Seat: Upon written request, the department's Bureau of Automotive Repair can provide information regarding an auto repair shop's license status, any disciplinary actions against it, and, in many cases, any complaints received.
Road Test A Repair Shop: It's a good idea to test the repair shop with a minor maintenance job, such as a tune-up or oil change. If you're happy with the work and service you receive, you've probably found the shop that's right for you.
Fill In The Blanks: Do not sign a blank work order. You must be given a written estimate, and it must include the total estimated price for parts and labor for a specified repair or service.
