Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. and Porsche Cars of North America, Inc. have joined the Alliance
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers today announced that Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. and Porsche Cars of North America, Inc. have joined the Alliance, bringing the total number of member companies to 13.
The membership for both Mitsubishi Motors and Porsche becomes effective on April 1, 2000. The Alliance was formed in January 1999 to represent the common interests of its members on a broad range of public policy issues. The 13 members are BMW Group, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Isuzu, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
While our members may be based in the U.S., Japan or Europe, they are all focused on motor vehicle safety, advanced technology, environmental protection, consistent global regulations and market-based, cost-effective solutions, said Josephine S. Cooper, president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
The leadership of the Alliance Board of Directors and Executive Committee, the governing bodies for the association, rotates on an annual basis. Representatives of the same company chair the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee for a one-year term. The Vice Chairman serves as Chairman-elect. In 1999, Ford Motor Company was designated as Chair, with DaimlerChrysler as the Vice Chair.
Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America, Inc. was established in 1982 by Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) as the exclusive distributor of Mitsubishi-badged vehicles. Based in Cypress, California, which employs more than 1,110 employees at its corporate headquarters, five regional offices and its wholly owned captive finance subsidiary, Mitsubishi Motors Credit of America, Inc.. Mitsubishi Motor Manufacturing of America, Inc., based in Normal, IL, a wholly owned subsidiary of MMC, is Mitsubishi Motors' passenger car assembly plant in the U.S. MMMA employs more than 3,200 people with Production and Maintenance Associates represented by the United Auto Workers Local 2488.
Porsche Cars North America, Inc., based in Atlanta, GA, is the exclusive importer of Porsche cars for the United States. A wholly owned subsidiary of Dr. Ing.F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs about 220 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, marketing and training for its 205 dealers in North America. Stuttgart-based Dr. Ing. F. Porsche AG, though the smallest of vehicle manufacturers, remains independent. Porsche also provides engineering solutions for virtually every other vehicle manufacturer.
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is a coalition of 13 car and light truck manufacturers. Alliance member companies have approximately 600,000 employees in the United States, with more than 250 facilities in 35 states. Alliance members represent more than 90 percent of U.S. vehicle sales.
